The idea was created during GIS capacity building workshops organized by local authorities, NGOs and the Universities of San Francisco de Quito, Salzburg and others, during 2013 and put into a workplan at the first Geocommunity GALAPAGOS workshop in February 2014 at San Cristobal, Galapagos.

Who are we?

The geoCommunity Galapagos is a joint initiative of local authorities, NGOs, engaged citizens and national and international GI-experts who aim at developing a GIS-based information-management system for the Islands. The process is structured around continuos cooperation between all project members and an integration of the local communities at Galapagos assuring sustainable results that are specifically tailored to the needs of the local stakeholders.

Please retrieve the complete list of participants here.

What is our mission?

Over the last decades, the Galapagos Islands have faced a considerable rise in human activities (tourism, population growth and migration, exploitation of natural resources like fishing and agriculture) which has resulted in increased pressure on both, the marine and terrestrial ecological system of the islands. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a management system that allows controlling of human interaction with the islands’ environment and adjusting human activities to its limited capacities. GIS has been identified as a proper tool for an integrated information-management system that allows local authorities and communities to take better action on all decisive assets of their living environment and get prepared to handle at best the challenges of a vulnerable and unique island ecosystem in the 21st century.

A selected group of GIS-experts from academia, GIS-practitioners, representatives of local authorities and initiatives is aiming at designing a conceptual framework for an integrated GIS-based information-management system for Galapagos in cooperation with local authorities and representatives of communities. This scheme should provide an all-encompassing base for efficient, effective and appropriate resource management of the islands.

Call for Tenders, Master Thesis

Z_GIS is announcing a call for tender of Master Thesis that should investigate the value of Citizen Science for biodiveristy monitoring focussing on Galapagos as a case study:

The call is open for all students of the GI-Master (AGI) of the University of Salzburg

Questionnaire

One major source for identifying the current use and needs of local insitutions in the field of Geographic Information Systems was the feedback collected with a questionnaire that was tailored to the specific framework of applying GIS in Galapagos.

Press Release (spanish)

This press release that was used as invitation for the final community event at the townhall of San Cristobal gives an overview of the participating local insitutions as well as of the international GI-experts that took part in the workshop.
